More than likely, if my mom allowed me, I’d fall in love with the simple promise of being whisked away to the stars. Starsiege: Tribes, Suikoden II, Half-Life, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and more were all stabs in the dark that paid off with hours of enthrallment in front of the glow of a CRT.Īs a young sci-fi fan, all anyone had to do back then to wrestle my hard-earned money from my wallet was throw some spaceships on a box. I discovered some of my favorite games with just the blind promises of the back of a box. The best you could do was to read a review or watch a grainy, minute-long Quicktime video that you spent an hour to download on 56k while hoping your $50 wasn’t spent in vain. It was a time when every video game purchase was a gamble. Any info would be much appreciated.EDIT: Found the hardware acceleration patch. On the site it says you can download the Gold Edition if you already own I76, but like I said, I get an "object not found" error when I go to actually download it. Does anyone have/know where I can find a 3D acceleration patch for this game? I have the Nitro Pack, which uses it, but I would really like to play the original game with it. I've looked around Activision's I76 site (which is surprisingly still functional), and they list a beta Direct 3D patch in the downloads section, but it appears the files themselves are gone. That said, the game is aging (released in '97), its sequel wasn't nearly as good (Interstate '82), and it lacked hardware 3D acceleration. Think Dukes of Hazzard meets The Road Warrior. I had loads of fun with this one back in the day, especially in all-out battles on the Internet. Up front, if you've never played this game, you've missed one of the best PC games ever made.
